Virgo is a public art installation completed as part of the Boise City / Capitol City Development Corporation "Eco Art on 8th" program. McKibben + Cooper collaborated with artist Amy Westover as one of three architect/artist teams completing projects in the 8th street corridor.
Virgo is a depiction of the night sky in Boise on the Autumnal Equinox, September 21. The stars are represented as stainless steel disks cut into the existing brick paving, and constellations are described with grooves cut into the paving and connecting the disks. The installation spans the right-of-way at the intersection of 8th and Front streets, and portions of it appear on all three corners.
The project illustrates the loss of the visible night sky in our cities, and shows what you would see if you could see the sky at night in this location.
